Squarefest celebrates small-town living

promo2-1Laura Edwards, president of the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce, said the annual Squarefest draws people from in and out of the city, county, and the state together to celebrate what small town living is all about!

“Squarefest is chance to visit, make new friends, find some unique items, and hear some good music,” Edwards said. “This year we are looking forward to all the vendors coming back and of course all the good food! There’s always such a ‘homecoming’ feel to our festival. Three class years are getting together for a joint reunion that same weekend so it’ll be an extra flurry of familiar faces around town!”

The 45th Annual Calhoun City SquareFest (formerly known as the Calhoun City Arts & Crafts Festival) starts at 5 p.m. May 29 with free concerts featuring Lyrix at 6 p.m. and Red Roots at 7 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs.

The girls from Red Roots said they “look forward to seeing our existing fans and meeting new ones!! It looks to be a fun festival!!” The red-haired triplets, Nika, Nicole and Natalie will perform from their third album, “Triplicity” that was recently nominated for a Dove Award in the category of “Country Album of the Year.”

A 5-K Glow Fun Run and Walk starts at 8 p.m., sponsored by The New Century Club with all proceeds to benefit the Calhoun County Fire Dept.

The fun continues Saturday at 8 a.m. with a variety of activities for the entire family. Red Roots will also perform at noon on Saturday. There will be political speakers, food, music, fun and craft vendors throughout the day.

Edwards said there are lots of exciting new items from the vendors and they are planning a lot of fun things for children at this year’s Squarefest.

“There’s a human hamster ball that looks to be loads of fun plus a train, jumpers, etc.,” Edwards said. “We have painted items, live plants, one of a kind coins, vintage wood crafts, honestly too many to list!”

Edwards said the event is a great opportunity to show some of the new additions to the square in downtown Calhoun City.

“We’ve added some benches for additional seating and the arbor that will assist with our farmers market is almost complete,” Edwards said. “There are lots of exciting changes for our town!”

Edwards said the Chamber receives a lot of positive feedback from the annual event.

“Each year, we get thank you notes from some of the vendors, commenting on how much they enjoy the time spent with us and how pleasant our workers and festival attendees are,” Edwards said.

Promotional sponsors for this year’s Squarefest event includes Kirk Auto Group and Blount Motors.
