Dumas named Starkville District President of UM Men

imageLamar Dumas said it is very important for United Methodist Men to take a leadership role in the community and make a difference where they can.

“I think it is important to be creative in our approach to leadership within the church and community,” Dumas said. “We don’t want to get stagnate. As a United Methodist Men’s organization, we want to be wherever the church asks and serve wherever the community needs.”

Dumas has recently been named president of the Starkville District’s United Methodist Men’s group. He is a member of Liberty United Methodist Church of Eupora, and active in the church’s UM Men’s organization for over 18 years, where he has served as president before taking on this new role on the district level. Dumas replaces Andy Tentoni as the Starkville District UM Men’s President, while Tentoni relinquishes the position to become the president of the Mississippi Annual Conference United Methodist Men.

“We are very excited that Lamar Dumas had been named as the president of the Starkville District U. M. Men,” said Starkville District Superintendent Dr. Embra Jackson. “We believe that Mr. Dumas will continue the legacy of the great leadership with the United Methodist Men in the Starkville District.”

Rev. Rochelle Ashford Minor, pastor of Liberty UMC, said she is very excited about the work God is doing through Dumas.

“God’s Spirit is truly moving,” Minor said. “I am so thankful to be part of a family that has a heart for God and for God’s people. Being inclusive is key to ministry.”

Being inclusive is a big part of the United Methodist Men’s organization. Dumas said at his home church, there are men in the community who are not members of the church who are members of UM Men.

“There is an acceptance and a willingness in this organization that is very important,” Dumas said.

This year, Dumas is organizing the Walk for Love, a 3K Walk/5K Run in Starkville on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. The United Methodist Men are asking clergy and laity to join them as they walk “for the love of our Lord.” Registration fees will be a $10 donation for the run and a $5 donation for the walk.

Dumas said he hopes this will be an opportunity for United Methodist Men (and others) throughout the district to come together for a time of fellowship and healthy fun.
